Repairable bargains: the fix-and-flip guide for broken tech

Published 12 June 2026 · 6 min read

"Spares or repairs" is the most mispriced corner of every marketplace. Sellers who cannot fix something price it as scrap; buyers who can fix it buy margin. The skill is telling a £5 fault from a £100 one before you pay.

The faults that are usually cheap

Some failures look terminal and are anything but:

  • Dead batteries — cordless vacuums and drills are routinely sold "not holding charge"; a replacement battery is often a fraction of the working item’s resale price.
  • Worn styluses and belts — turntables get sold as faulty for consumables that are designed to be replaced.
  • Clogged nozzles and dried-out feed paths on 3D printers — frequently a cleaning job, not a parts job.
  • Missing chargers and accessories — items priced as broken because the seller lost the power supply.

The faults that are usually money pits

And some discounts exist for a reason:

  • Water damage — corrosion spreads; assume the worst.
  • Cracked main boards or sensors on cameras — the part often costs more than a working body.
  • Motor or gearbox failure described vaguely ("turns on but doesn’t work") — price in a full teardown.

Pricing a repair flip

The arithmetic has to survive three numbers: purchase price + realistic parts cost + your time, against the working item’s resale value with selling fees taken out. A good rule: if parts alone exceed a third of the working resale value, walk away — something else always comes along.

On OmniUse, repairability is one of the components behind the Opportunity Score, and the "repairable" category on the marketplace collects items listed honestly as needing work — each scored on whether the fix is economically worth it. Pro users can also run the Repair agent on any analysis for a diagnostic checklist, a parts list, and a repair-versus-replace verdict before committing.

Fix-and-flip rewards patience and category knowledge more than tools. Start with one category you understand, learn its two or three common faults, and the "spares or repairs" filter becomes a buy list.
